Types of Dental Implants

If you’ve ever lost a permanent teeth, there’s a good chance you were provided a dental implants for your replacement teeth. Dental implants allow you to live the way you want to, for example – confidently eating, laughing, talking and enjoying all of your everyday activities without worrying about your teeth. But if you are considering implants, you must have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant, exceptionally professional dentists at Avalon Dental Center always give all information.

A dental implant is a titanium post (like a tooth root) that’s surgically implanted into the jawbone or skull beneath the gums. Once they have been placed, a professional team can properly and securely mount a replacement tooth. These implants are usually used not only for individual teeth but can also be used in conjunction with dentures, crowns and other cosmetic dentistry purposes such as porcelain veneers.

There are some nuances, an implant doesn't come loose like a denture can and dental implants benefit general oral health because they do not have to be anchored to other teeth.

There are several types of dental implants. Each offering different benefits based on an individual’s needs.

  • Endosteal: These dental implants are placed in the jawbone, literally means “in the bone”. Typically made of titanium and shaped like small screws, they are the most commonly used type of implants. Once the area around the implant has healed, the prosthetic tooth’s attached to the implant. Patients should expect upwards of about 6 weeks for full recovery. This allows time for the bone to grow around the implant(s) and for the body to accept the implant(s) as a permanent fixture. Patients are advised to follow up with their professional dentists so as to ensure healthy healing.

  • Subperiosteal: These dental implants are placed under the gum but on, or above, the jawbone, for patients who don’t have enough natural bone height to accommodate endosteal implants. And this type of implant may be used in patients who don’t have enough healthy natural jawbone and cannot, or don’t want to, undergo a bone augmentation procedure to rebuild it. These are metal frames that are usually placed on the bone rather than inside of it. This is a process in which the aforementioned frames project through the gums and the prosthetic tooth or teeth are affixed. The expectation is for the gum to heal around the frame, allowing it to become completely attached to the jawbone, the exceptional result of the procedure can only be achieved by a team of dentists.
