DENTAL BRIDGE IN CAMBRIDGE, MA & SOMERVILLE, MA
A dental bridge literally bridges the gap which you might have by missing one or more teeth.
The dental bridge is made up of several crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap - these anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth - or a false tooth/teeth in between. These false teeth are called pontics and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials. Dental bridges are supported by natural teeth or implants.
Our dentists in Cambridge, and Somerville will give you several options of dental bridges.
Types of Dental Bridges
A traditional dental bridge involves creating a crown for the tooth or implant on either side of your missing tooth, with a pontic in between. This traditional type of dental bridge is the most common one and is made of either porcelain fused with metal or ceramics.
Implant-supported dental bridges use dental implants as opposed to crowns or frameworks. Our dentist will surgically place an implant for every missing tooth, so these implants will hold the bridge in position. In the situation where one implant for each missing tooth isn’t possible, the bridge may have a pontic suspended between two implant-supported crowns.
Benefits of the Dental Bridges
Dental bridges offer a wide range of advantages.
First of all dental bridges will restore your smile! It will look beautiful again.
Restore the ability to chew and restore your manner to speak.
Prevent the remaining tooth from drifting out of position.
Improve your speech. Dentures will help you to enunciate your letters better and restore your usual manner of speaking.
Maintain the shape of your face and improve your appearance and increase your confidence.
The Dental Bridge Procedure
The first step is to file the abutment teeth into an appropriate shape for the bridge to be placed. Impressions of the shaped teeth are then made and sent to a dental laboratory for the construction of the bridge. The prosthetics should be closely matched in color to the surrounding natural teeth for aesthetic purposes, so a sample color should be taken at this point.
If your bridge is implant-supported - our dentist will surgically place an implant.
Some patients may be fitted with a temporary bridge, which is typically made out of filling material and functions to protect the shaped teeth from damage while the permanent bridge is being constructed. This dental bridge will be removed when the permanent bridge is ready.
The second appointment for the dental bridge procedure will be scheduled as soon as the unique appliance has been made and is ready to be placed. Once again, don't worry! A local anesthetic is usually applied at the beginning of this appointment to increase patient comfort.
